Microsoft has recently shared from April 2023; they will be rolling out improvements to the way that their DMARC policy is currently handling email within both consumer and enterprise services. Upgrading their policy from “quarantine” to “reject”.

DMARC Rejection Policy – What does this mean?

Currently, if an email sent to Microsoft email accounts fails DMARC, the policy is to quarantine it, such as placing it in the junk folder. However, Microsoft is updating its DMARC policy to reject such emails. Once the rollout is complete, any email that fails Microsoft’s DMARC authentication will be rejected and won’t reach the recipient’s inbox, with the sender notified of the non-delivery.

Microsoft’s implementation of this DMARC reject policy aims to safeguard users from spam, phishing, and email-based fraud, ensuring that only legitimate messages are delivered. Consequently, organizations that haven’t correctly configured their DMARC record for all email domains and senders will find their emails no longer reaching businesses or consumers.

What is DMARC?

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is a security protocol designed to authenticate email domains. It gives domain owners the power to protect their domains from unauthorized use or misuse. By using DMARC, you can better protect yourself from email scams and other forms of fraudulent activity.

Moreover, implementing a DMARC record can enhance your domain’s reputation as a sender and increase the chances of your emails being delivered successfully. It’s a valuable tool to improve your email deliverability and ensure that your messages reach the intended recipients.
